Sandbah Cafe on Gilbert Street in Torquay is a laid-back spot that fits comfortably into the local morning and midday rhythms. As a combined café, breakfast restaurant, and coffee shop, it draws in a diverse crowd—from early risers grabbing a quick coffee and roll to casual diners settling in for heartier brunch plates.

The atmosphere inside is tidy and straightforward, reflecting the practical needs of both locals and travelers passing through. The interior feels fresh without fuss, making it easy to relax whether you're here alone with a book or catching up with friends after a morning surf. The friendly staff help keep things running smoothly, which adds to the calm, welcoming vibe.

Sandbah’s menu leans into classic breakfast and lunch favorites with an Australian twist. You’ll find hearty options like the Big Breakfast and Eggs Benedict alongside some lighter, contemporary choices such as the Smashed Avocado served with spinach and mushrooms—often favored by those wanting a healthy, filling start to the day. Their chicken and Asian-inspired salads balance freshness and flavor, appealing especially around lunchtime. There’s also a good variety of sandwiches and toasties that locals seem to appreciate for a casual meal.

Coffee is treated with care here—order a long black or a café latte and you’ll get a well-made cup that fits the easygoing beachside mood. The café’s openness to Asian influences extends subtly into their drinks and salad options, reflecting Torquay’s mix of laid-back coastal culture and diverse palettes.

For timing your visit, mornings before 10am work well to catch their Early Bird specials, a popular choice with early risers and weekend visitors wanting a solid breakfast without a rush. Lunchtimes attract a steady flow of people looking for a tidy, reliable spot to refuel during a day trip or local outing.

While mostly smooth sailing, some practical details matter—there’s chatter among visitors about the restrooms needing a bit of upkeep, which is worth noting if you plan to linger. But this doesn’t overshadow the overall comfort and satisfaction felt by most diners.

Overall, Sandbah Cafe works well for those seeking straightforward, well-prepared breakfast and lunch dishes amid friendly service and a simple, clean setting. Its location in central Torquay means it’s a natural pause point whether you’re starting your day or just taking a break from exploring the coast.

Perfect place for a relaxing breakfast or lunch, clean and tidy with fantastic and helpful staff. I highly recommend the Smashed Avo with Spinach and Mushrooms added and the Warm Chicken Salad with Grilled Chicken Breast, Spinach, Pumpkin, Capsicum, Walnuts, Red Onion, served with Flat Bread.

A bit of a day trip lunch stop. We didn’t really pre plan where we were going to eat (what a novel experience for me) and didn’t put a lot of thought into it upon arrival either. I was after a salad and they had a chicken and cashew creation that fit the bill. Reasonably priced and a reasonably good portion. Not a bad choice if you are out this way

Really nice food and coffee - I had the Hams the Man toasted sandwich and it was delicious! Friendly staff. My only small complaint is that the toilets need a bit of attention - no paper towels or hand dryer and ripped lino

Lovely food and nice coffee. Great service. My husband had the Big Breakfast and I had Hams the Man. Both were delicious.
